Grow Your Own Indoor Herb Garden

When you grow your own indoor herb garden, you can help save a great deal of money on our grocery bill while enjoying a fresher, healthier, tastier produce. Growing your own indoor herb garden is especially fun because they can be grown and used right in your kitchen.

Culinary herbs are the most popular for growing indoors. There's nothing like having fresh basil to add to your favorite pasta dish, or fresh cilantro for that special Mexican dish. Once you start using fresh herbs in your favorite recipes, you'll never want to go back to using just dried herbs again.

Herbs are easily started from seed. Stop by your local greenhouse for the supplies you will need for your indoor garden. Be sure you have a bright, sunny, south facing window sill to grow them in so they get plenty of sunshine.

Some of the most popular culinary herbs are basil, cilantro (also called coriander), chives, oregano, mint, parsley, and sage.

The key to growing your own indoor herb garden is to choose quality seed, have adequate lighting, good quality starting medium and proper watering.

Most seeds that you buy from a reputable company will be of good quality. Good lighting is essential to ensure healthy, sturdy plants. South facing windows are best for your seed starts. A high quality, soil free planting medium is imperative for seed starting. It is light and open to encourage rooting, it can hold generous amounts of water without becoming waterlogged, and it will not harbor harmful fungi that cause disease. Watering is more of an art than a science and takes some practice to get the hang of it. Soil should be kept consistently moist but not at all soggy.

Landscaping Small Yards

Landscaping small yards can be a challenge. Deciding whether you want a sunny or shady area or maybe a combination of both for your yard will determine the types of plants and flowers you will use.
