Want a big look in a small space? You can create a private oasis with loads of color all on a typical, city-sized lot. Your small backyard designshould include lots of curving gardens. Curving gardens will actually make a small space look larger because you can’t see everything in the yard at once. You will have to walk around the corners to enter another area of the backyard. Along with the curving lines, raised flower beds and tall plants create some mystery and privacy.
You can use steps, arbors, gates and pillars to mark entrances and exits throughout the yard. You’re trying to create a transition from one area in your small backyard design to another area. If you’ve used curving lines and raised flower beds in your design chances are you won’t be able to see the entire backyard from one view point, which is fine, however you will want to create unity with your design.
Creating unity in your small backyard designs can be accomplished by using the same curving lines through your paths and within your flower beds. You could also create unity by using the same color of flower or the same type of plant sprinkled throughout your design.
A small backyard design would not be complete without an area to sit and enjoy the view or to entertain your guests. You can place a wooden bench somewhere in the middle of your design for a nice cozy place to take a break. Or if you have a patio or porch in your backyard, create an outdoor sitting area for entertaining.
